Sometimes the nicest scents are too overpowering for the people around you (and maybe you, too). Yet unscented body moisturizers can seem tame. At DEWFACE, we adore the inexpensive Love Beauty and Planet line, especially the Love Beauty and Planet Shea Butter and Sandalwood Body Lotion, one of our testers (Barbara) found the scent too overpowering for her friends. Even though she had applied it hours ago, her best friend asked her to *please* wear an unscented lotion next visit. Her partner said something similar about that “overpowering scent.” The lotion (unfortunately) isn’t going to work in public or around her significant others, or really anyone who is sensitive to scents. Too bad! It really has a lovely scent and we appreciate all that the company is trying to do in terms of their carbon footprint and ethical sourcing of natural ingredients.
Don’t give up on Shea Butter lotions just yet
Shea Butter is too good for your skin to pass up. There ARE unscented natural body moisturizers with Shea Butter that have its moisturizing qualities without the recognizable scent. Thesis Organic Body Cream with Raw Shea Butter is one: it’s unscented and great for sensitive and ultra-sensitive skin (it’s even good for babies and grandbabies).

An old favorite lotion to the rescue: Alba Botanica
After trying several unscented brands, Barbara landed back on an old favorite beauty line: Alba Botanica. Their Very Emollient Unscented Original Body Lotion REALLY has no scent. It’s scent neutral; unlike some so-called unscented brands or products that actually have a slight chemical or medical after scent. And there happened to also be a lucky side benefit to using the Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion: the Hydration Factor. After using it for approximately a month, she noticed that her Keratosis pilaris (small, rough, tan or red bumps around hair follicles on upper arms, thighs, buttocks, and cheeks), a condition that appears in patients with dry skin or atopic dermatitis issues, was GONE! Her upper arm skin was back to being smooth and dewy after years of annoying red bumps. Although the Keratosis pilaris condition is considered “incurable,” the very positive effects from the emollients in this lotion is next best to a cure.
Worth a try too: Nature’s Gate
Nature’s Gate, another natural standby and excellent, inexpensive product line (in existence since 1972!), has an unscented Colloidal Oatmeal Therapy Lotion that is both Vegan and Non GMO (it’s also Paraben Free, Soy Free, Mineral Oil Free, Petrolatum Free, Butylene Glycol Free and Cruelty Free, by the way). Barbara, our tester, has used this brand and this product off and on for years with good results. The blend is an ultra-sensitive skin combo of Oatmeal, Echinacea, and Red Clover Blossom. For those of you who check ingredients closely, their website lists over 25 ingredients in the lotion, but most are seed or kernel oils and other safe components.
|TIP: If you have sensitivities to fragrance, scent or essential oils, we recommend checking the list of MADE SAFE® products certified to be Fragrance Free and free of potentially allergenic ingredients.|
